What this infographic shows

Falling back moves an hour of daylight from the evening to the morning. The sun does not change; only the clock does. On Sunday, November 1, a New York sunset that came just before 6 p.m. the day before comes just before 5 p.m.

Each bar is one day from October 1 to December 31. The taller the bar, the later the sunset. Light indigo bars are days on daylight saving time and dark indigo bars are days on standard time. The drop in the middle is the clock change.

How to use it

  1. Pick a city. Sunrise and sunset are calculated from its latitude and longitude.
  2. Compare October 31 with November 1 in the boxes at the top.
  3. Hover or tap any bar to see that day’s sunrise and sunset.
  4. Try Phoenix. Most of Arizona stays on standard time, so there is no drop.

Will the clock change end?

The Sunshine Protection Act would keep daylight saving time all year. The House passed it 308–117 on July 14, 2026. It now needs a Senate vote and the president’s signature. Until that happens, clocks still change twice a year.

Times are calculated with NOAA’s solar equations and can differ from published tables by a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

When does daylight saving time end in 2026?

At 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Clocks go back one hour to 1 a.m., so you get an extra hour that night.

Do I set my clocks forward or back in November?

Back. Remember "spring forward, fall back". Phones and computers change on their own, but car and oven clocks usually need to be set by hand.

When does daylight saving time start again?

On Sunday, March 14, 2027, at 2 a.m., when clocks go forward one hour.

Is daylight saving time being made permanent?

Not yet. The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act on July 14, 2026, but the Senate must also pass it and the president must sign it before anything changes.

Why is the earliest sunset before the shortest day?

Because the Earth's tilted axis and its oval orbit shift solar noon later through December. Sunsets keep getting later after about December 8, even while the days are still getting shorter in the morning.
